Easy DIY valentine’s wreath

Easy-DIY-Valentines-Wreath-VinYet Etc

Hello and welcome friends, this is my very first post for 2017, I’ve been a bit of a slacker lately! πŸ˜‰Β  I actually lost my creative mojo somehow… I have no idea where the heck it went, I guess when I took a break for Christmas my mojo decided to stay on vacation? I’m not back to 100% myself yet either, but now I know exactly why I’m still down, ugh… there is a lot of stuff going on in our world right now and every single outlet is saturated with so much anger and hatred it seems! Times are scary and unknown in the world and all social media feels overwhelming and filled with hostility. It’s completely draining me. I wasn’t even sure about posting a tutorial about this Valentine’s day wreath… doesn’t that just seem a little unimportant right now? But, I decided that if I was going to dig myself out of this funk I needed to keep doing me and continue to share what I love and I know that when I find something happy and interesting online it lightens my mood… so here I am lightening my mood and hopefully adding a little break for you too.

Valentine’s Day wreath – with dried peonies and copper pipe

Easy-DIY-Valentine-Wreath | VinYet Etc

So this wreath didn’t turn out at all like I had in mind… usually that’s a bad thing but this time I’m not upset at all that’s it’s not exactly like I envisioned… I’m kinda loving it! So what is it about this wreath that didn’t turn out like I envisioned? Glad you asked, it’s really only the copper and the patina… I wanted a brighter copper and a much brighter green patina. The concoction I found online didn’t work exactly as planed… but like I said I’m happy with it.

I’m not usually a decorate for valentine’s day type of girl… but I had some dried peonies from last spring… I over documented my obsession on Instagram last year, I’m sure I will again this year too.Β  haha, this obsession it’s a real thing, I may need an intervention… not kidding!

Easy DIY Valentine’s Day wreath tutorial

Things you will need:

  • dried flowers of your choice (I used dried peonies of various sizes) – I’m hoping to write a tutorial on how I dry my own peonies, stay tuned for that!
  • faux leaves (I borrowed some leaves from an Ikea plant)
  • 1/4″ copper tubing (available at any hardware store)
  • soldering iron and solder
  • twine
  • glue gun with glue sticks
  • dremel
  • Miracle grow (haha yep you read that right) – optional
  • spray bottle – optional

Steps:

  1. Decide on the size of your wreath, I used a pizza pan as a guide and it helped to make the copper coil nice and round.

2. Mark the cut points and cut with a dremel.

3. Solder the cut ends together.

4. Mix one part miracle grow with 3 parts water and spray the round copper wreath. This step gives a patina of aged copper and is an optional step.

This is what it will look like when dried…

5. Once completely dry wrap a portion of the copper with twine – gluing the dried flowers directly to the copper won’t work as the glue does not stick to the copper.

6. Now arrange your dried flowers to suit, add a coordinating ribbon and you are done like dinner.

It’s hard not to feel a bit down with everything that’s going on. It seems like everyday there’s something new. Anyway, I feel that anything that spreads the message of love right now is so important. Didn’t actually know you could dry peonies. Something to try this summer. Sending you happy vibes, my friend!

Thanks Shauna, it’s so true everywhere you turn there seems to be something negative on the go, I need to focus on the love and turn of the negative noise. Yes you can dry peonies, I have so many! Thank you for the happy vibes, right back at ya! xo

It is so lovely! Peonies are my favourite, so I’m only partially biased. πŸ™‚ And I’ve been feeling similarly down lately. It’s like I have ideas but no get-up-and-go to get them started.

I had NO idea that you used a copper pipe! Genius! Though I could never be trusted with making one of those myself… Pretty sure I’d burn something down hahaha But you sure do know how to make a perfect wreath! Oh, and yes to the drying your own peonies tutorial. I don’t have any at the new house (that I know of), but that won’t last long!

    • Reply Laurie February 9, 2017 at 9:33 pm

Awww thanks love! haha, I doubt you’d burn stuff down! haha I will for sure be writing up that tutorial, everyone should be able to keep these beauties around, the colour just stays and stays too!

This wreath is simply beautiful, Laurie. I would keep this hanging up all year round. I hope to have more luck with growing them this year so I can make one!
