Use it or lose it! How to incorporate vintage into your home.

Use it or lose it… haha that sounds very hardcore, doesn’t it?  I’m not actually trying to be hardcore – but if you are at-all like me, you need a stern talking to every now and then… and if you have vintage treasures tucked away that aren’t seeing the light of day, then we are definitely twins! Raise your hand if you buy it because you like it and get it home meaning to do something with it… there are so many projects (in my head) and gorgeous vintage pieces out there – and I’m saying ENOUGH (for this post)! Well, not really enough vintage because – well that’s my jam but I am saying enough of tucking stuff away, of not using it and I am challenging myself to actually start doing something with the awesome vintage that I bring home!

Creative Vintage Darlings

I’m so excited and proud to officially introduce you to our Facebook group – Creative Vintage Darlings!  We are a community of vintage loving friends (AKA enablers – HA) – myself and my buddy,  Heather over at HOMETOHEATER.COM started this little FB group last year and have meet so many wonderful vintage loving friends since then (PEEPS just LIKE US)! haha who knew there were so many vintage lovers out there? 😉 If you’re looking for a group that will talk you out of that awesome vintage purchase(s) – we aren’t THAT type of group – we don’t need that kind of negativity in our lives! hahahaha

BUT, if you are looking for a place to find like minded peeps to,  ohhhhh and ahhhh all over your new-to-you score, than we ARE your people – not to mention all of the excellent info – get help in identifying your score, find out what it’s worth and promote your vintage / etsy shops – we got it all! Heather and I are so happy to have the most amazing admin on board too, sweet, knowledgeable and so vintage-gifted! (that’s totally a thing) You can meet most of the team at the end of my post – we are getting together today to share and challenge ourselves to use our own vintage scores!   All of us we have a lot of stuff happening behind the scenes but we figured… since we all adore vintage so much why not share our combined knowledge and show you how we love to use vintage in our own homes.

Incorporate Vintage Into Your Home

My thoughts exactly! I collect things I love and being able to use your vintage pieces in your home doesn’t have to be a complicated thing…  The Creative Vintage Darling’s  team is hoping to share and inspire you with what we’ve learned along the way – being avid collectors (doesn’t that have a lovely ring to it – better than avid hoarders – :D) and vintage lovers ourselves we are so excited to share that with you! You can see the team’s vintage goodies and how they are using them in their homes at the end of this post.

As for me, well I will be sharing a very simple way I use some of my vintage horde! I just shopped my home, like I did here.  Spoiler alert – I updated something from my stash with paint, now, back to this project…  

I love tins… a bit of a weakness actually (I know, I know – insert eye-roll here – I have a lot of vintage weaknesses). There is just something dreamy about the beautiful old graphics on a worn tin! I’ve displayed some beauties over the years and now most of my beautiful tins are tucked away – my kitchen doesn’t have an abundance of display area, unfortunately – huge bummer. Regardless – I have decided to use some of my favourite vintagey stuff more – with a little rethinking I’m now using some of my favourite tins as candles! I’ve made soy candles before – here – and I really love the way they burn, this time I’ve added a yummy maple smell, now I have my fave tin on display, using it every chance I can, it totally makes the house smell delish and cozy! YAY! 

DIY Vintage Soy Candle(s)

It’s VERY simple to use a favourite vintage tin as a candle… this is how I made a soy candle with this old coffee tin (EASY @ FAST DIY). 

Melt the wax (as per directions) using your favourite soy candle kit and flavour (I used soy flakes from Michael’s – flavour from Amazon) pictured above. I also decided to be very lazy and use the microwave! I’m sure I’m way behind in the realization that this makes it SO much easier and faster – but mind blown – haha it doesn’t take much, seriously! 

1. Wipe out your tin, I gave it a clean with soap and water and got rid of the extra rust – I left some because – lazy and easy. 
2.  Dollop a bit of hot glue in the centre at the bottom of the tin.
3. Place the metal wick holder into the hot glue. 
4. Pour the melted wax into the tin – slowly.  (PS I filled all the vintage things with wax – yay) 

Let everything cool down and simply snip the wick as per the directions… roughly an inch long. 

So easy, right? It took me no time at all, in fact it took me more time to clean up – I’m so messy! And of course I did a mini photo shoot too… let me know if you’ve made candles with your vintage favourites?!
