Hello Friends, welcome back! Today I’m going to chat about creating cozy vignettes with cake stands. Yep, I simply LOVE all the pretty cake stands I’m seeing on Instagram lately – gimme, gimme. I mean not only do they hold yummy cakes and delicious treats, I absolutely adore using them in my decor (cake stands more than dessert holders). It’s such a great way to add visual height to a vignette, don’t you think? I love them so much so that, when I found a jadeite lamp base at the flea market I knew right away that I wanted to repurpose it into a cake stand. I’ll save all of that DIY for another post, right now though let’s talk about the Elephant in the room shall we… and by Elephant I mean the month! WHAT the – how can summer be gone already?
October
As repetitive as this sounds… How the heck did OCTOBER get here so FAST??? WOW, just WOW! The beginning of the month, regardless of how fast it gets here, (like a speeding bullet) is always my fave though… Why? Well, because the #CozyLivingTeam get’s back together and we coz-ify all the things!
Oh October, you really are my favourite though – I’m loving getting my shelves Fall ready and of course, cozy!
The #CozyLivingTeam is hosted by the lovely, Jennifer from Town & Country Living – we all get together on the first Saturday of the month to share our cozy ways, please stick around because I share all of my talented friends at the end of this post. xo
Vignettes
If you’ve been here for a bit you know, vignettes are my love language! They make me happy, looking at them = giddy, creating them = is my over the top happy place! It kind of makes sense (at least to me) that I named my business Vinyet and of course the Etc is for everything else I love to do (squirrel) – ha ha ha. Anyways, back to the point at hand, creating vignettes using cake stands. Cake stands are an amazing way to add visual height to a vignette, a way to create a grouping and add layers all with a pretty cake stand.
Layers
I love layering my vignettes and making them “cozy” by adding in a soft touch. In draping something flow-y and textured onto a hard surface, (usually a vintage handkerchief or a vintage tablecloth) really helps to add a casual look and feel – these handkerchiefs are mostly family heirlooms and this is my way of appreciating them everyday. They are enjoyed rather than tucked away somewhere, maybe forgotten. And besides, I simply love how they lighten this whole vignette. Another way I layer in my vignettes, is to stack or collect like things together in a grouping, pretty little thrifted plates, jute twine with little scissors all collected and stored in an unexpected “container” gives texture and makes things functional – I actually use the scissors and jute, having them in one place makes my life easier and I’m loving the way this looks, so that’s a bonus.
Pretty Storage
Storage doesn’t have to be hidden away, make it pretty to your eye – display your treasures! By using cake stands I can see my Nan’s linens with her perfect hand-stitched edges, some cute pie birds, my Mom’s pretty plates stacked and holding an ironstone pitcher that I love – all elevated on cake stands for visual enjoyment – something I can “visit” with daily.
As you can see, I sometimes “borrow” from past vignettes and move my treasures to the new vignettes… those stacked ivory plates were a thrift store find and have been all over the kitchen… and they now proudly sit on our new jadeite cake stand.
Instant Cozy
Full discloser; I make a complete mess in our home while vignetting! And, further to that, I’m oblivious to the fact until the vignette is “done” (is it ever really done?) – it’s chaos really, just ask Bud. 😉 It is a disruptive activity sometimes (all of the time) and, it’s been the way I’ve created since as far back as I can remember… However, once all the mess is tucked away and cleaned up, and it’s “just-so”, THAT is my favourite feeling! Having our home reflect who we are and highlighting the keepsakes we love is, like I said above, my love language. Even when I’m not able to tear apart and rebuild a vignette I often add “instant” cozy by simply adding a candle – easy. It casts a warm and cozy glow… and the amber for this Fall is just right, don’t you think? All of this yummy contrast makes this girl so happy and it gives me all the cozy feels!
Thank you very much for stopping in for October’s cozy post, I am always so inspired by my talented friends and I adore joining them in this hop. Well I’m glad to find out I’m not the only one who creates chaos in the house when “vignetting.” LOL. Seriously – it’s a disaster. I’m DROOLING over your jadeite cake stand! I’ve never seen one like that before. And your vintage cabinet that holds your collectibles – it needs to live at my house. 🙂
I think most of us creative types create chaos while “vignetting” and out of that comes the pretty! I’m in excellent company! I’m feeling the urge to create a mess again with that cabinet… our home was full all week and some of those dishes are still out all over the island… I’m taking that as a sign to create some chaos! 😉
