DIY clock

My love of re-purposing and antiques, added to that a slight obsession with clocks, (alright “slight” may be an understatement) a full blown fixation is more like it!

This DIY is gonna be awesome! 😀

A clock made out of an antique stovepipe collar…what? Yep, I’ve seen these pipe surrounds used many different ways.

Some with wheels attached to them and used as a base for heavier floor plants, some folks put photos in them, I’ve also seen some used as mirrors (pictured below), those are really cute and I’ll have to do this one day too! The possibilities are endless…

I just love the patina, character and charm they have! Back in the day they made stove collars so pretty, the ones they make today just don’t have the same character at all, kind of sad.

These two little beauties get so many compliments, they are the same but really that doesn’t matter, they are so visually pleasing that different patinas, sizes and shapes would make for a very interesting wall – hang them, display them, just use them!

I’ve never seen one used as a clock however – really?!?!? They are so perfect for that re-purposing how can I not make a clock out of one?

I’ve been hanging on to this one for years, perfect for this little DIY.

Materials I am using…

The black you see the face leaning against is a backing from a frame that fell off of our wall, our windows were open, and a huge wind ripped through our property, we were lucky that only a frame fell off of the wall… Silver lining, I’ve kept the guts or backing off of the frame and for this application it’s perfect.

I’ve laid the actual pipe collar on the black side of the backing, simply trace the opening onto the black, remove the collar and make that circle a bit wider (I did that free hand), we need an edge to fasten to the back of the collar.

Cut the larger circle out of the black with a jig saw (I did this free hand also) and sand or paint if required.

Print, buy or reuse a clock face you like and one that will fit into the round opening of your collar, I printed this face, isn’t she pretty?

I decided that this face shouldn’t go on regular paper (too flimsy), so I cut a brown file folder to fit into my printer, 8.5″ x 11″, worked like a charm.

I’ve glued the clock face onto the black circle, making sure it’s centred, use spray glue for a nice flat adhesion.

The black dot in the centre of the face is your guide for where your clock hands will go. Drill or hole punch, ( I drilled, matching the bit size to the arm size of the mechanism). I used an existing clock mechanism I had laying around, this project so far is free…My favorite 4 letter word!

Perfect timing (no pun intended) for this little DIY, spring forward this weekend – we are loosing an hour of sleep yes, the gain?  Spring is just around the corner and boy it’s been a long winter!
