Thrift Store Treasures
Thrifting is my love language, I adore going to the thrift stores… I love a deal and I love to find unique decor items that aren’t cookie cutter (not that there is anything wrong with that). My obsession started way back in the late 80’s when we were first married, we just couldn’t afford any home decor items (we were basically babies), heading into the thrift stores was one of the only ways I cozied up our home over the years. And now, I simply adore finding the unique and interesting item to add that extra bit of cozy! AND, thrift stores don’t actually JUST mean dedicated “thrift stores” either… I love thrifting at flea-markets, on Facebook market place, wanted and selling adds, estate sales and free-cycling is so totally in right now. 😉 To have a thrifting state of mind and seeing the diamond in the rough is how I function naturally, it does help that I am so into it! 😉
When I’m thrift shopping I don’t usually have a specific thing in mind, I usually know when something has to come home with me, it’s a feeling really. I do have common things I gravitate towards however, I love wooden drawers and warm wooden trays, pretty ink bottles, Ironstone and copper always makes me stop and ask myself, do I need this? I literally could go on and on here. In the image above I had to have that little green vintage Emile Henry pitcher, I mean it’s SO adorable and that colour was perfection. I also thrifted the wooden tray with the cute feet, I sanded it a bit and oiled it and it’s as good as new! I love how it organizes my thrifted copper watering can the green pitcher and the cozy candle.
So cozy!
As it gets cooler out I love to bring out all of the candles… making your own candles using thrift store vessels is also a favourite way to use thrifted items.
Tins are my favourites for candles – you can see how I made this candle here – “Use it or lose it! How to incorporate vintage into your home.”
Transformations, maybe too big of a word for here really… but, what I’m trying to say is just because it was intended for one thing doesn’t mean it has to be used that way in your home. My favourite example of using something for a different purpose is reusing bases of oil lanterns as a vase. These are usually all over the thrift stores.
When I’m styling in my home I adore using things I’ve rescued! 😉 That stool in our pantry was a rescue, those wooden mashers are thrifted and rescued… all of my transferware is all thrifted. The frame and the print resting on the shelf is also thrifted. Basically this whole vignette is all thrifted.
All thrifted!
Like I said above, most of these items in our pantry are thrifted, but one of my faves in this room is that little piggy… that pig is cut out by myself from a thrifted cutting board. You can see how I made that here. It was patterned after my Mom’s cutting board from my childhood.
Hmmm, even the door into our pantry is thrifted, this door was off of Facebook market place… I’m always looking and hunting! 😉
I almost never pass up interesting wooden pieces, you will continue to see them everywhere in my vignettes, all thrifted.
This $2 bowl looks awesome with the faker plant!
This dried thistle is contrasted beautifully by that thrifted bingo sheet, it adds a warmth and a contrast that I love in my decor.
These art pieces are all thrifted… I am always looking for those sweet little oil paintings, they are getting harder to find so I snag them when ever I see them. I got a HUGE kick that I found these two oil paintings in different places and months apart yet they look so similar. Yay!
I could literally go on and on about my thrifting life, I mean it’s all the time, hahahaha! But, I’m going to wrap this up by saying that creating a unique and cozy home with thrifted finds is such a great alternative to running out to the big box stores and buying the latest trend. For me it’s so satisfying! And, the fact that I’m reusing things by thrifting makes me so happy, thrifting really does keep things out of the landfill. How about you, would you consider yourself a thrifter too? Tell me about some of your favourite thrifted finds. xo

You always find the prettiest little treasures Laurie and nobody styles them in a vinyet or photographs it quite so beautifully as you my friend! So beautiful!
I love the idea of making candles in your thrifted item, just brilliant. I had no idea that plant was fake in the $2 bowl, it sure looks real to me and the bowl was a great buy!
I wish you lived closer so we could vintage hunting together! You always have the best vignettes and I’m loving the brown and green together! That $2 bowl is amazing.
It’s been 50 years of “thrifting” to make a cozy home! When I was first married (18 years old) I couldn’t even afford the thrift stores! But I had an aunt who loved the flea market and she was always bringing me something! In the 70’s I used to spray paint everything black. Between my mother, my aunt and my grandmother I put together a wonderful home. My aunt’s favorite saying was “stick with me and you’ll wear diamonds!” As I sit here today I wear her diamond engagement ring turned into a pendant in a cozy home still filled with so many thrifted treasures.
I always love seeing your vintage thrifted items! You display everything so well! That scale is giving me all the heart eyes!!!
I can relate to you so much, Laurie! Your home never disappoints. Every inch is full of charm and a story. I just adore it! I also love finding a good deal, especially on something unique. Thrifting is a fun hobby for me as well and FB is always great too. Keep up the hunt! You always find the prettiest things.
I love all your thrifted finds! My mom started me yard sale-ing and antiquing quite young. I love how vintage finds can add so much warmth and layered stories to a room.
