Well, September is here already and our flower garden is looking very scraggly… After a week and a half away on vacation, plus the fact it’s nearing the end of the growing season my little experimental cutting garden has looked much better, I must say. But, I’m pretty sure I can create a pretty and simple flower arrangement using the last of our garden’s flowers. Fingers crossed it turns out! 😉
Scraggly but still cute, I mean flowers can’t be ugly even if they tried!
Cozy Living
Cozy Living is hosted by my lovely friend, Jennifer over at Town & Country Living. The Cozy Living team is a group of cozy loving friends that simply love to share how we live a hygge life. There are so many inspiring and creative ways to live a cozy life and this team has all of the inspiring ideas. Please stick around until the end of my post, you will find more from my CL friends, they will also be sharing wonderful ideas for September.
Pretty Flowers
I had no idea what flowers I wanted to plant for my cutting garden, I basically went into the nursery and asked for some hardy cutting flowers and the lovely lady pointed me to a few different varieties. Dahlias are amazing aren’t they, they just keep on giving and there are so many different types! I planted zinnias too and some cosmos and lavender. I was easily overwhelmed in the nursery, I’m glad I only went with a few different kinds (this time). I’m already thinking about next year’s garden though… if you have any must have cutting flowers please share those recommendations with me, I’d love to try some new beauties. We live in zone Zone 4b -25°F to -20°F.
What a miracle of nature, the colours are just perfect!
I love the stripe of colour on the one petal.
Simple Flower Arrangement – What You’ll Need
I have a confession though… I am NOT a flower expert nor am I an arranger of flowers! Things I do know, I love the little buggers and I think they are cute regardless of the arrangement! 😉 Having said that, instead of “this is what you need”, that title should say, this is what I used.
Sharp scissors.
A basket to carry all of your cut flowers into the house… you may notice that I also cut some taller herbs to add a little height to my arrangements.
Gather some vases, I of course love using my vintage as my vases. ** Please ignore the mess in the background, I’m a messy and we just got home from vacation.
TIP: When using vintage pottery as a vase, I have found that the pottery sometimes slowly leaks… so I usually put a water filled glass or bottle inside of the vase, this will protect your pottery and the surface you place your flowers on.
Playing with Pretty Flowers
I love the fall feeling of this arrangement, from the colour and the basket weave pattern on the medalta pitcher to the sweet vintage hanky with tiny fall coloured flowers, cute right? The colour palette of the actual flowers ties it all together – it all just works beautifully.
I didn’t want to put all of the flowers in one vase… I used multiple vases, I’m so happy with how adorable they look all gathered together.
The amber bottle vase with the zinnias is adorable too and can completely stand alone. I love how wispy the cosmos and the lavender greenery add more height and interest.
Finally the tiny green pitcher, I simply put the rest of the flowers in this cutie… this just makes me smile.
Hello lovely!
Thank you all so much for popping in today, I am smitten with my little flower arrangements. I’m basically a gardener now. 😉 Seriously though, tell me about your favourite flowers in your cutting gardens? I am hooked and think I might look for some tutorials for flower arranging. If you have a favourite flower artist, by all means please share that too! xo
Now, I can’t wait to have a peek at what the cozy living team is up to for September, I know it’ll be cozy and inspiring!

It’s such a treat to cut flowers from your own garden! They are so beautiful!
It’s totally a treat isn’t it, I’m hooked and can’t believe I didn’t do it sooner! Thank you! xo
So very pretty! You just motivated me to go out and cut some flowers to make my own arrangements!
Thanks Jennifer, get out there and cut those beauties! 😉
Love the use of the vintage hankie, so adorable. My flower garden looks pretty sad right now too. I’ve been harvesting seeds for next year and once I’d done with that I’ll be pulling it all up.
Ahhhh, you can harvest seeds? I will have to look that up! Thanks, that hankie is so sweet!
