DIY How-To

These little vintage oil lanterns are actually very simple to make. This is what I used to make these little cuties, a quick DIY how-to.

  1. Use any bottle(s) you love. Just make sure that the bottle will hold liquid and have no leaks and is steady. I chose these teal coloured vintage bottles. I tend to really love anything with lettering, these bottles were perfect.

2. Next I ordered these white ceramic, knob style wick holders.  They are perfect and fit wonderfully in the top of my favourite bottles.

3. I wanted the bottles to shine, I decided to use a lamp oil that is colourless, odourless and smokeless. This is the type/brand I ended up using.

4. I also poured the oil into the bottles over the sink using a funnel, lined the bottom of the sink with paper towel, I didn’t want any oil going down the sink if there happened to be a spill, the paper towels soaked up any spills.

5. Fill the bottles (not too full), the cotton wick will wick up the oil to the top of the cotton. It is important to keep the wick very short, that will help the flame burn clean, without smoke. This (pictured) is still too long, the cotton should just be peeking out at the top of the white ceramic.

6. Lite the wicks and adjust the length of the wick as needed. There should be no smoke and the flame should burn steady.  Once your oil lanterns are ready, place them in a safe place and enjoy!
