DIY Plant Stands from Vintage Stools – Thrifty Style Team

In all my years of thrifting and vintage hunting, it has become very clear that I am attracted to vintage stools! Not a bad thing for sure, but there are only so many bottoms to sit on those stools! 😉  I’m here to tell you, stools aren’t just for sitting any more!  Today I’m chatting about how I DIY plant stands from vintage stools.

Plant Stands from Vintage Stools

I mean piano stools where made for plants, in my opinion! I freshened this one up with some paint and oiled the wooden top – I’m currently searching for another to add to my collection.

I’ve been using vintage (everything) for my plants for many years now, I especially love to customize something and make it functional. You can see how I made these stands for my vintage crocks and of course I use crocks for plants too!

Full on vintage chairs also make pretty awesome plant stands! I love this oak industrial office chair, she’s easy to roll around, I like to change things quite often so the wheels are handy dandy!

My favourite thing about using vintage stools (besides how they look),  I adore how I can tuck them into smaller spaces, they don’t take up a huge footprint and they are so very easy to move around.

I love how these sweet little stools can tuck in around a door way, our living room gets very little light because of our covered porch, but our kitchen gets tons! So I like to tuck the plants in the doorway (thankfully it’s wide) now I can see my plants from the living room too, it’s a win win.

The texture and character of vintage stools just can’t be beat, IMO!  This stool was just a seat without a bottom and was in our barn for a few years… last week I decided to marry it to the bottom of a stool I didn’t love so much. I’ll show you  what I did below to make this DIY vintage stool (AKA plant stand).

How To DIY a Vintage Stool

I sometimes bring home misfits… meaning, the top of something that has no bottom or vise versa. That’s the case with this stool, I was immediately drawn to the texture on this seat.

This top seat has been sitting in the barn for years and was in dire need of a good scrubbing. I do love the patina so I decided not to strip it, but just gave it a good cleaning.

So this isn’t quite the before of the base… hubs got his hands on it before I could say I need a before shot. 😉 So, just picture the chrome part being painted the same-ish dingy colour as the seat part.  Shout out to my babe though for getting that paint off  with the grinder.

These are the steps I took to marry these two different stools together.

1. Repair any loose or broken parts. Bud was kind enough to weld the broken leg back on for me.
2. Remove the legs from the base.
3. Clean the round top of the chrome stool.
4. Make marks where cutting is needed.
5. Connect the dots and confirm where the cutting is needed.
6. Cut the marked line, I used a jigsaw.
7. Add the legs back to the round base, I used self tapping screws.
8. Paint the whole base, I used matt black.
9. Clean and oil the wooden top.
10. Attache the top to the bottom legs once your paint it dried. Make sure the screws aren’t too long or they may go through the seat portion.

For less than $10 I’m very thrilled with how this stool turned out! Something that was wasting away in the barn is now an awesome and functional plant stand, yay!
