Happy Birthday Munk! Munker, is the nickname we gave to our baby boy Michael, “baby” is a relative term today because he’s 6′-4″ and not much of a baby any more! :’) Our “baby” just turned 23 on March 20th – I can’t even believe it! Time is a bitter sweet thing…
As a young Mom I was completely obsessed with my kiddo and if you ask his girlfriend she’d say I still am… π I do miss my little boy, I always will, I think all Mommies do?
He is going away to school this coming September and will be taking audio engineering. One afternoon while visiting him at his apartment he was showing me some very cool audio stuff, (as technical as I get) and I noticed that the desk he was using was sagging, jam packed and just plain sad looking!
Mike took this picture of his existing desk for me. Things I love: the toilet paper, hehe, the organized way he has and my blog is up on his computer! Having a pride moment right now! <3
During that visit is when I got the idea that he should get a brand new desk for his birthday… this project took on a life of it’s own, like many of our projects do. I asked him to sketch something up and we received a sketch of 2 desks… project already growing…
There will be three posts for this build, reveal 1, 2 and the tutorial, it’s a big project I don’t want to put you to sleep…
This Industrial desk is not a complete set, this has evolved into two desks for our audio student… desk number one is done, these are the shots I took when we revealed it to Mike, on his birthday.
{It’s a big piece of furniture, I had to use a King sized duvet cover to conceal it a bit}
This Industrial desk is perfect for his needs, the smaller set of shelves are for speakers, and the middle shelf is for the top tiered monitor (27″ iMac) he wants to put there… his laptop will sit on the top, flat. All of those shelves are not attached to the top, as we didn’t want him to be locked into this piece always being used for a desk, in my mind I can imagine this as an awesome island for a kitchen… the height is designed with him in mind, so he can stand when he produces, this, he says is a “game changer”… I guess he likes to stand when he works? All I know is that he is very happy with it! That makes this Mama & Papa bear happy!
{I love this picture, one is just as detailed as the other, Mr. Meticulous, Sr & Jr… <3}
Instalment one of three, even now it’s evolving, when these pictures were taken the discussion of lower shelves came up, we are adding those right now… I wanted to show our spin on the Industrial style that seems to be everywhere on the interwebz, I’m loving what we’ve done so far… what do you think?

I have lots of wood to use, can do most DIY… we are also working on a VERY tight budget!!

PS Happy Easter to you too!
How can i obtain access to a set of plans. Nice build and I assume that you can install this under the main desk for drawers as well.
Hi G, I’d have to draw these up in AutoCAD for that, this is a complete custom build from sketches and our minds. You could install a drawer, or many drawers as this is custom. Thanks for stopping in!
Wow! I love how it turned out. What an awesome gift! I am sure he will have it for many many years to come =) Happy Birthday to your “baby!”

Laurie! OMG you guys really blew it out of the water – this is a dream desk for any 23 year old audio engineer, that’s for sure! And I’m sure he will get so much use from it long into the future. Unique, cool, and versatile. And home-made! Lucky boy to have such talented parents π
haha, he’s one of those rare people who really appreciates that we made that for him… it’s kinda cool! He’s such an awesome kid, hard to not go that extra mile for him. I can’t wait to write the tutorial… :/

Oh my gosh! This is just amazing and I know your son must be really loving it. I can see this piece as an island in a kitchen, too, so it’s good that you made it so adaptable.
Our son loves his desks, he has a whole room to him self now, with the set up he wanted! He’s happy! Not I just have to write the how to on the build. Thanks for stopping in! xo
What are the dimensions on that desk?…thanks!
Hi Ivan, working on the technical post for the desk now… it’ll be posted this week.
