Hello my friends, welcome! Today I’m excited to be bringing you the NEW Summer Colors Home Tour – this series is hosted by my lovely friend, Jennifer over at Town & Country Living. This creative community of bloggers will be sharing how to use favourite colours when decorating for summer. Summer Colors home tour started on Monday, but don’t you worry I’ve linked everyone up for you at the end of this post. 🙂
pretty summer colours on a rustic porch
I think one of my favourite design elements has to be contrast… I’m always drawn to light against dark, textured paired with smooth, you know what I’m saying, right? There is just something about that juxtaposition that gets me, every time.
I’m bring this up because in getting our porch summer ready for any season I’m always faced with how very rustic it is. Don’t get me wrong I love our porch, I just don’t love all aspects of it, the fact that it looks like a hunter’s cabin in the back woods used to really bother me. And, I’m wondering what “code” the builders used on the railings?
After being here for 5 years, I’m happy to report that I’ve really grown to love this space, maybe not the full on R U S T I C of it – but I do love the vibe of sitting out here when it’s still a very crisp Spring evening and then later on when we are deep into those Canadian falls – Brrrr. But let’s not talk about Fall, let’s talk about right now, there is nothing at all like just sitting here when summer is at it’s prime and the sun is starting to hang low in the sky! It’s my absolute favourite!
Right now in this moment it’s our rustic space for all it’s good and a tiny bit of not so good and my thinking is… why not just act like it’s perfect? Slap those rose coloured glasses on and do all the porch-y things you’d do, as if this was the space of your dreams – DON’T WAIT, am I right?! Having said all of that – I do tend to ramble (sorry), I decided to use pretty summer colours for our rustic porch, NOW! Pretty with rustic… hmmm, I think I may be on to something.
Pretty to me is P I N K and pink is perfectly contrasted against green – meant to go together. The soft pinks and green really just exude summer vibes for me, cheery and light and exactly how summer should be.
different ways I bring colour in
I usually start with some kind of a game plan, this doesn’t mean it has to be anything too complicated, for me it started with this bit of inspiration and grew from there. It can sometimes be chilly here in the evenings and I felt that this awesome & uber cozy blanket could be justified for a summer porch. These colours determined the whole colour palette, it even inspired the look and feel of our romantic porch this year – Thanks HomeSense!
That pretty blanket has also inspired our DIY Flowered Summer Wreath & our DIY Vintage Potting Bench – the potting bench that I did not paint white, even though that was my original concept. Even our romantic corner getaway was touched with pink and green…
Nature does colour best, don’t you think? Pretty (and hardy) Fuchsia Plant – sometimes called the floral ballerina, isn’t that adorable?
These ceramic hanging planters from my friends over at Afloral are just the right touch above the railings – showing off all the pinks and greens.
Pretty gerbera daisies, are also perfectly pink.
I seem to be a little obsessed with ferns lately too, the perfect punch of green and texture! And those baby succulents just past that fern, add a touch of pink on their edges, look at them hanging there, so sweetly on the trellis I made with vintage rulers. Obsessed with plants much, Laurie? hahaha
And, when all else fails… improvise. I searched and searched for the right little welcome matt for our front door, no luck. Seriously when something is in my head I never find just the right thing in stores, can you relate? So I faked it. 😉 What I mean is, everything was perfect about this jute matt ref the colours, except the big orange flowers. No problem, I just did some quick highlight painting with some very light almost white pink and issue fixed.
And my favourite part about the front door matt(s), the buffalo check “matt” below. I LOVE this contrast. I used my favourite paint Fusion™ Mineral Paint in Coal Black and some light distressing. I used one of the awesome stencils designed by my friend, Donna at Funky Junk Interiors – have you tried her line of stencils? You really should go shopping and check them out, so much fun and easy to use – you can find the whole line here at Funky Junks Old Sign Stencils.
I am loving our rustic yet romantic porch this summer, it’s a relaxed atmosphere around these parts and I’m so glad I went with colours I don’t usually choose, I think even this dude likes it! 🙂
And because I have no self control when it comes to pretty flowers… 😉 I will end with lilacs! Sigh, they don’t last very long, sadly.
Thank you so much for visiting, I hope you’ve enjoyed how we are using pretty colours on our rustic porch? What colours are you using in your summer spaces this season?

Laurie, I love every aspect of your rustic porch and your stunningly beautiful photos of it! I think it was so clever of you to stencil your buffalo check mat and to change the colours in the other mat to better suit your scheme! Look! I even spelled the word colors the Canadian way!
Your outdoor area is so beautiful, I could sit for hours!
laurie- i sat down…now I don’t want to get up. your porch is just beautiful!
Ha ha! I’m laughing at Laura’s comment. Laurie, I think your porch is gorgeous and amazing. Its rustic appeal is what makes it unique. But truly, I think your porch is my most favorite porch!! You have such a knack for creating vignettes. Loved your color tour!
I’d love for you to share this post tonight a Talk of the Town! The party starts at 6 pm CST.
So pretty, Laurie! I, too, love the high/low mix of feminine with masculine. Your porch is a perfect example of how all the pretty things look wonderful against the rustic. Gorgeous photograpy, as always:)
Laurie, this is so lovely! I love your idea of rustic with pretty…and the colors you used are beautiful! I love all of the pieces you brought together wonderfully and your photos are so pretty, too!
Laurie, I curled up with my coffee to take this all in! What a beautiful post, and I am loving your colour palette. I laughed when reading your comment about pretty and rustic going together – I think so! I’m all about sparkle and rustic being a dynamic duo 😉 And your buffalo check touch – well, that’s fun! The pop of colour we’re working with this summer is red. Red geraniums in vintage wooden pots against a backdrop of gray and darker stained wood.
