19th Century Copper Kettle – William Soutter & Sons Co.

What a gorgeous antique hand wrought acorn finial copper kettle, by William Soutter & Sons Co (H).  This kettle is a beautiful example of a 19th century antique (1896 to 1919) and is a must have for collectors.

The firm was founded as Soutter & Hicks (Soutterware) as long ago as 1760 at 10, 11 & 12 New Market Street, Birmingham. They were coppersmiths and brass-founders and specialized in quality kettles, architectural ware, electric light and gas fittings and also undertook bronzing and electroplating. In 1896 the business was incorporated as a limited company and moved to Farm Street Works at 359 – 380 Farm Street, Hockley. The firm came to an end in 1928.

This kettle is stamped on the base with S&S with a W, this is the makers mark and the size is marked 8. The H under the logo indicates that this kettle was made in Hockley and the time period is from 1896 – 1919.  This beauty is over ONE HUNDRED years old!

The kettle has a brass handle with copper around the top of the handle, really nicely made.  Dovetail seems as sign of age and also that mark for William Souter has the H rather than the B, the firm having moved to Birmingham from Hockley around 1896.

The Copper lid is tin lined with a brass  hand wrought acorn finial, beautiful details.

Body Condition:  In very good antique condition with wonderful wear and patina, has small signs if wear. There are no holes in this kettle or dents of note. The lid fits very well and the handle is secure. I suspect it will make a fine cuppa tea yet!  Item has not been polished, I wanted to leave it up to the buyer’s individual tastes.  (please see photos)
