Have you ever looked at a beautifully styled photo and wondered, how does that work IRL? I know I sure have! Today I ‘m going to be talking about our vintage potting bench and how I’ve styled it with function in mind, while keeping it pretty! If you’d like to see how we built this potting bench, you can see how we did that –> here!
Creative Vintage Darlings!
LOOK at this beautiful new logo by my talented friend, Heather over at HomeToHeather.com !!!! So exciting!
Not only am I sharing some of the tips I use when styling a space, I’m also joining in with my favourite kind of people today – yep, it’s like two, two for the price of one kind of deal on this fine day! hahaha 😉 My peeps, my enablers, my kindred spirits are also sharing some vintage goodness and you can read more from them at the end of this post! Who are we? We are the, The Creative Vintage Darlings team and we run an awesome (a little biased) Facebook community full of vintage loving friends – If you’re looking for a group that will talk you out of that amazing vintage purchases – we aren’t THAT type of group – we don’t need that kind of negativity in our lives! hahahaha
Seriously though – Creative Vintage Darlings is a growing community of supportive like minded friends that all love, I mean really LOVE vintage!

How to add function in when styling
Use what you already have, in my case I’m using some vintage items I already own (my hoard as Bud would say). I’m using theses vintage goodies to add some interesting storage ideas on this potting bench – but really you can use any vintage on any piece that you are styling… for example, crates, bottles, hooks, tea pots… you get the idea, sky is the limit.
I like using the drawers that are actually a part of the piece to hide the “ugly” things you need… bug juice, bug coils (ah country living), sunscreen and a flash light or two… close that drawer to hide the uggo!
Create a surface area for working, this stepped back bench is great for setting pots on, replanting herbs, for setting your tools on… sometimes though I need a bigger surface so I use the floor of our porch, right next to this antique copper ash bucket (I filled this with soil).
Zones – create zones. Tools, watering, potting and storage… you know all the things that you do on a potting bench… I also like to have a stool near by for sitting while I work. But in all honesty, I usually set stuff on the stool too, it has become my handy dandy other surface!
Modify things as needed – I wanted my clippers at a quick grab location and they just didn’t have an option to hang, so I tied some jute around the handle and now, she hangs nicely! 🙂
Turning a bottle crate on it’s side is a perfect storage cubby.
I am addicted to vintage crates actually… you can use them to hold all the rest of the tools you need for gardening, work gloves, plant fertilizer – what ever will fit in there basically.
Vintage hooks – add such charm and are a great way to hang up your quick grab items.
Bottles are my favourite way to display my garden clippings.
Speaking of clippings… herbs are new for me this year and this vintage key holder is the perfect way to hang them to dry, functional but really cute.
A ladder next to the potting bench just extends the function of this bench and I love the way it looks too. I hang my sunhat there along with my apron, the apron that I always think to put on after I get covered with dirt… anyone else do that? 😉 HA ha
And finally, I love that I’m using my favourite vintage scale here – just use what makes you happy even if it’s only for holding a beautiful plant!
Thank you so much for stopping in! I so appreciate that you take the time out of your day to pop in to see what I’m up to! xo

Laurie, Great minds…I put a lot of my “ugly” stuff in a vintage stove on my porch. Great post, great tips! And always, lovely photos! Thanks for organizing our hop today!
Thanks Lora! 🙂 I’d love to see that awesome vintage stove, sounds dreamy!
You really do have a lot of great “STUFF”! If I ever visit make sure you check my pockets before I leave. I feel like I might turn into a klepto if left unsupervised around all that goodness!
Oh and thanks for the tips. 🙂
Hugs,
Karin
What a beautiful post Laurie! I love your use of vintage crates, and happen to be on the hunt for one to store our olive oils and vinegars in. And did I spy a Swift crate in your mix? Very cool. You have so many tips that just make sense – ideas I never would have thought of but am glad to learn. Thank you for sharing them and thank YOU for organizing this blog hop. Also, I wholeheartedly agree with Lora – your photos are always amazing. That’s my IRL curiosity! How do you do it??
You have created the prettiest and most interesting potting area that I’ve ever seen. I love that you have a functional space that is so attractive. I always enjoy seeing your vintage things and also the stylish way that you both display and use them. Thanks for organizing this blog hop!
Your home is a dream! Honestly, the prettiest, most gorgeous space I’ve seen in ages. How I wish I could visit it in person!
